THE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT AS AMENDED IN 2004
By Rud Turnbull,
Above link has a copy of a PDF book that I used in my advocacy classes. It is also sold in paperback which I bought on Amazon for around $5.00. I needed the PDF to allow me to use a text to voice program.
Anyway the reason I like this book is because it gets into the appropriate wording of the re authorization of IDEA. When I am writing a letter and can't find just the right words. My memory is poor and I have to retrieve the words maybe more than normal people do. I go here and often find the appropriate wording and key phrases I need. Search the PDF under goal, progress, Independence etc. It is a short 77 pages long, an easy read and worth it just to get a better grasp of the correct terminology and what the intentions of the re authorization were without having to go through thousands of pages of legalese. It's been a few years since it came out but still I get good use out of it.
Appropriate wording and vocabulary when used can have an impact on the notes you attach to your IEPs and letters to districts.
For a more intense read I also Highly recommend some of the other books that I had to read in the Advocacy training which were
Special Ed Law 2nd edition from wrightslaw.com (also down loadable which enables you to quickly search or listen with text to speech)
and one from LRP called What to do when: Answer book on Special Education Law.
For parents just starting the Journey a MUST have as anyone here will tell you is "Emotions to Advocacy" also from wrightslaw.com. You will be miles ahead of the game by just forcing yourself to sit down and read this. In my opinion there are no excuses to not read or download this book because your disabled kids depend on your understanding the laws which will enable you to fight if you must for a Free and Appropriate Education otherwise known as a FAPE.
If you have trouble reading like I do you can search under free text to voice or text to speech for software that you can try out which can assist you. My point is - there are no excuses for 3 of the 4 books I have just recommended.
