I am printing it out to give to my son's teachers. He is ADHD/Inattentive and have an LD in Written Expression which according to Mayes & Calhoun research study, is twice more common than comorbid LD in either reading or math.

I have used this article in the past with teachers at school. It is a very good resource. There is also a new book out by Dr. Thomas E. Brown that discusses ADD as more of a syndrome. He focuses on Executive Function as having six separate clusters and how they are impaired in ADD syndrome. The book is called Attention Deficit Disorder-The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults. It is a very interesting read. You can read more on his website. http:// www.drthomasebrown.com

sorry about that! scroll down and the test is at the bottom right. It's called the "Stroop Test" It's harder than it looks! BTW I think it's a great idea for a science fair project, testing to see who can do it faster, girls or boys, adults or children. www.aboutkidshealth.ca/ofhc/news/SREF/4144.asp

I have finally taken the time to read more of teh articles mentioned above. Specifically, I have been reading from www.aboutkidshealth.ca/ofhc/news/SREF/4144.asp. Does anyone have any expericnece with the COGMED working memory program talked about in these articles? I had never heard of this one but it is very interesting. KAthy

I have been reading the article on Executive Dysfunction again and am wondering, is there anything we can do to improve executive function? I mean other than accomodating and trying to learn coping strategies, is there anything we can work on to actually improve it? It really helped understand the issues but we are so tired of accepting and coping with issues and would like a way to improve. My son needs a break this summer ( and so do I) but if there was something he could do to help him in the future, I'd like to look into it.

I am not able to post a new thread, my browser keeps closing it. But I thought some of you would find this interesting:
Teacher Factors Associated with Better Outcomes for ADHD Students:
1. Kowledge of interventions for ADHD 2. Collabaortion with the interdisciplinary team 3. Patience 4. A positive attittude toward children with special education needs
This is from an abstract in ADHD Report, from an article that evaluated 14 reseach studies on teacher factors. Sherman, J. et al (2008) THe impact of teacher factors on achievement and behavoural outcomes of children with ADHD: A review of the literature. Educational Research, 50, 347-360.
Of course, this seems obvious that active, involved and teachers motivated to help students with ADHD and special needs leads to better outcomes. But the reviewer say much more research is needed and given the experiences so many have had with teachers, you know its true. Then, the research needs to be put into practice.
