Hi all, I am new here. I followed the other forum for some time now but never posted. I have an 11 yrd old boy who is my life. He was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 4 and recently with Aspergers. This year he is really struggling in school. He is taking Ritalin LA and Zyprexa and Trileptal. Are there any others out there that have kids on Zyprexa?? I just don't feel like I know enough bout it. We have tried in the past the Strattera but unfortunatley it didn't work for my son. Stims really seem to give him facial tics and recently has a lot of anger. Nothing has changed in his life other than getting older and maybe puberty?? I'd love to hear from anyone that has some advise.!! Shannon

ShannonB, welcome. Unfortunately, I have not experience with Zyprexa, but I hope some of the other members who are more knowledgeable about this medication would chime in.
However, I found this info for you:
ZYPREXA is the brand name for a medication approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, for maintenance of treatment response in schizophrenia, and for treatment of acute mania associated with bipolar I disorder in patients displaying a manic or mixed episode. The scientific name for ZYPREXA is olanzapine.
ZYPREXA belongs to a large category of medication that affect the mind, called psychotropics. Antipsychotic medicines are psychotropic medications that treat the symptoms of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. ZYPREXA is a newer kind of antipsychotic medication known as an atypical antipsychotic.
ZYPREXA is believed to work by balancing the chemicals naturally found in the brain.

Shannon, can I ask what happened with the Strat? What were its effects, or lack of and what other meds was he on at the same time? Weight/dose?

Hi Shannon, I am also new here. My son is 7 years old and diagnosed with ADHD and Mood Disorder (not otherwise specified). He is on Adderal for the ADHD and he was on Zyprexa for a while. We found that on that combination of medications his mood was stabilized and he did well in school. Unfortunately, aside from making him very sleepy (which is not a bad thing) his appetite an hour after he took the medication was ravenous. He barely ate all day long and then post Zyprexa he was insatiable. Then we tried Geodon (another - very new anti-psychotic). No food side effects, but he was up all night and slept during the day. Now he is on Seraquel 300 mg at bedtime (adderal 20 mg in the am and at 11:30 am.) He still eats only at night, but his appetite is under control and he sleeps well.
Let me know if you have any specific questions. I also want to point out that our first psych prescribed 5 mg of Zyprexa 3 times a day. Fortunately my bro and sil are both in psych and they had me question the does immediately. He titrated up to 7.5 mg of Zyprexa at bedtime and thats where he stayed (we changed psychs, by the way!) Oh my thanks so much for all the replies! Here is my story. Strattera didn't seem to do anything for the little guy he was on a total of 60mg. He just hit the 95lbs mark and he is very tall 5'1 for only being 11. Great kid just sometimes has behavioral problems mostly at school. Right now the meds that he is on are Ritalin LA 40 mgs a day, 7.5mg of Zyprexa at dinner and 900 mg of Trileptal. His moods seem to go back and forth. The last two weeks we had him going to school during the day over at the hosiptal so the Docs could observe him with his meds. They went 1 day where they didn't give him any of his meds so they could see what they were dealing with. Sadly enough that day was a disaster. At that time he was taking Concerta, Zyprexa and Trileptal. They dropped the Zyprexa and added Geodon and dropped the Concerta and went to Medadate. That was even worse, the poor kid seemed like he was so wired and his heart just raced. So they then changed the Medadate to Ritalin LA thinking that was what was wiring him up but it wasn't it was the Geodon. So, I think we have a good mixture going with the Ritalin LA and the Zyprexa and Trileptal. I just feel so bad for everything this my son has gone through. Today is his 1st day back to school after 2 weeks out. Please keep your fingers crossed that it all goes well. Like I said he is a wonderful kid with such a HUGE heart and he just wants to be liked by all. Thanks again for all of the replies. I just wish Strattera would of worked for him, I don't like medicating him if I don't have to. Just breaks my heart!

ShannonB, Thanking you for sharing the info on the Geodon. As I posted above, Dave would go a couple of days without sleep while on the Geodon. His behavior was good, but, honestly, the last thing I feel like doing at 2:30 am is chatting with an energetic 7 year old (although he was pretty funny!). My thoughts are with you as he gets back into school.
What is Trileptal? I am not familiar with that medication. Riva

Riva,
Trileptal is also a mood enhancer. It really helps my son. Glad to report that his first day back to school was a good one. And I wanted to tell you...GOOD JOB on questioning the amount that he was prescribing. Sometimes, that scares me. Did your child experience and sleep walking while taking Zyprexa?? Oh my goodness he has been waking up around midnight wanting food, food and more food. Luckily he is tall and skinny that weight won't hurt him any but am concerned that he is sleep walking and wanting to eat so much in the middle of the night. Our next appointment is on the 14th and I'm going to question this and in the meantime I will monitor him closley. I'm a light sleeper and his room is right next to mine.
PS..Is Adderall working well for you?? We thought about doing Adderall vs Ritalin LA but he has ALOT of impulsiveness and was terribly afraid that would come out even moreso! Let me know!
