My son is 13 years old and has been only recently diagnosed as ADHD. The psychologist that talked to him about it did a wonderful job. He explained it in a biological sense that made sense to my son. The first and only medication that my son tried was Straterra. It has made such a difference that even my son credits the medication for helping him to focus. He does have a wonderful group of friends who accepted him before, but now they are quicker to ask him to come over- he is not as exhausting as he was. His friends know that he is ADHD and on medication. I think this has been really helpful for him. The one problem he does continue to have is that he speaks so rapidly that he is often hard to understand. Does anyone else have a child like this? any suggestions? ;D

My son doesn't speak rapidly but he thinks too rapidly, his mouth tries to keep up . The other day at dinner I had it! I said "Shut your mouth and EAT!" The irony had both boys laughing till dinner was cold! My son is only 8 and I hope he is in as good a place as yours by 13. He is odd, different...but right now his peers are seeing this as cool. I like to think that having "cool parents" ;D helped this. Still, they like him in small doses. Thats OK, hes popular, funny and very enthusiastic about everything. Once we explained everyone has a "problem" and ADD was his "problem", he would go up to kids on the playground and say "Whats your problem?" Some how, he makes it all work for him. I work hard all the time to find the advantages to this disorder, I think its all in the perspective and if we can pass it on to the kids, we've done more than any medicine can do.
