Ok. It looks like we are finally going to be having a 504 meeting at the school tomorrow. I keep expecting them to cancel it or something but...so far...it is still on. I worked and worked to get this set up but now I'm getting nervous. I guess there will be my husband and I, the teacher, the principal, the school evaluator and the Special Ed. Director/504 Coordinator present at this meeting. the teacher this year and last have both filled out paperwork and noted any accomodations they made or are making for him. I have not seen any of this nor had any input in the process. I'm assuming that I will have some input at the meeting. Is this a fair assumption? From what the Sped/504 Coordinator told me they plan to implement no timed testing, preferential seating and the opportunity to re-write messy/illegible work. I feel like there is so much to consider that I can't think what else we wanted/needed.
I KNOW that he forgets to write down his assignments and forgets to bring home books 2-3 days a week. His "forgetfullness" in all areas of his life seems to be getting worse instead of better. Is there a particular way that any of you have been able to ge the teacher to work with you in teaching your children how to be responsible about writing homework down in a certain place AND retrieving the needed books, etc.?? I do not feel that just telling the class to get their things together is doing any good for my son. I would love to implement something where he is rewarded someway for writing things down and bringing things home. I'm willing to reward him if the teacher can follow some guidelines for helping him get it together. He has to be TAUGHT somehow to become organized, etc. and I can't teach him by myself since I'm not there. Any ideas of what you have tried? He does SOOOOO much better with positive reinforcement than with punishment for NOT doing something.
I'm also interested in how you can write into the 504 to get a handout of notes for testing, etc. since his writing is so bad. I don't want him to think he doesn't have to try because mom is going to get a handout anyway. There again, I wouldn't mind rewarding him for NOT needing the handout.
I am concerned that when we get to the new school in November that they will require him to write in cursive (he is in 4th grade). I don't know that I can address that now on the 504 since it is not an issue with his current teacher. Any ideas on that?
I feel like there may be more things I should address at the meeting but I can't think what they are. I feel that I have become as disorganized as he is because of stress....(moving, etc.) If there are any common accomodations that I have not mentioned, please feel free to mention them.
Math and writing are going to be our biggest battles. He has POOR rote memory which makes all the times stuff and issue and multiplication a major issue. He also writes poorly both gramatically/content and handwriting wise. not sure if there is anyway to address anything with regards to these issues besides getting rid of the timed testing. Is there anyway, without a dysgrahia dx, to get an accomodation to grade more for content than presentation? He knows alot but he doesn't spell correctly or capitilize consistently.
Sorry for all the rambling...and wouldn't you know...the 504 Coordinator just called as i was typing this. She wantsed to wait till Thursday evening to meet after they get the 9 weeks grades. I told her my husband would be gone by then and he wanted to participate. So NOW..we are meeting tomorrow to discuss everything but they want to see his grades before finalizing anything. Does that sound right? What does any of that change. They had his midterm grades which were A' B's and a C. I doubt they will change much and i don't even think he has 9 week exams in 4th grade. Hmmmm. Just something to complicate it and put it off more.
Thanks for any input.
