My 13 year old is already on a truancy program because he was constantly late for school but this morning he is just lying in bed planning on going in on his own sweet time. He knows that he could be put into foster care if he won't comply with the truancy plan. Why doesn't he get how serious this is. It's incredible. I don't believe his thinking is 'that won't happen' - I think he does realise he could go but nothing seems to make any difference. I'm really just venting here because I find his attitude so amazing. Aaaaaaugh! Maybe he needs to go.

I am so sorry! THis sounds so stressful! I have a daughter who has a huge issue with getting up on time and I have to really push... She also has a medical problem we have found that makes it worse.
have you had your son fully checked out to rule out a sleep disorder or something else that is interfering with sleep?>
I hope you can figure this out and find some way for him to take charge.....

Well, he got his games and computer time taken away that night which really sent him into a melt down. He stormed off but by the time he came back he was a lot calmer plus our therapist was over. Anyway, since then he's managed to get into school on time. Although I'm sure this effort won't last long. He has always been a big sleeper it just seems to of gotten worse since teendom arrived.

Wow, so you mean he can be taken out of your home and placed in foster care if he is late for school on this program? I can only imagine the stress this can cause you!
I think some teenagers require more sleep because of hormones? I know of a few that even have to take naps just to function! What does your doctor say about this? Does he have a problem that would be called a sleep disorder and this is why he is not able to get up in the morning? Are his meds contributing to this?
Can the program be modified to allow for a late arrival due to medical conditions or do you feel it is purposeful?

Late again today - Grrrrr. He seems determined to screw this up. I think there comes a point when you have to say 'Well, he knows what's on the line here. It's his choice at this point.' I'm about at that point right now. He's not stupid. He just seems determined to push this right to the brink. If he gets to that brink I'm going to let him step off because he needs a wakeup call.
