HI, This is MAMAK but I couldn't get signed in so I created this user name.
Just checking in to see how everyone is. I was around back when my son B was in 4th grade and now he is near graduation in college. He will graduate this year has one full time semester to finish and one class to take after that. He took the 5 year path in order to not be overloaded and he has been on the dean's list all but one semester. He is already working in his field of Civil Engineering. He started working last summer as an intern and has a choice of 2 jobs at the firm after December. He also has a steady girlfriend who is also becoming a Civil Engineer.
For those who remember the battles I fought and the line drawn in the sand with my district so long ago, might remember my words to the district after asking and receiving an inadequate response to my question to them as to how much progress would a child like mine be expected to make using the districts scientifically researched reading program. I remember receiving a sad look from the district rep. and being told that my son has a disability and it was hard to say. I responded that my son had a 130 IQ and I disagreed with their program and that my goal was to make sure my son could make the choice of being a garbage man or building a better garbage truck. So he was able to make a choice and he is now taking part in designing freeways!
Looking back it was some crazy times which I would never want to relive often those days. The retaliation from the district was unbearable but it was a dirty job and somebody had to do it. LOL So glad I stuck to the goals I made rather than those made by the district. It was always so nice to have a place here to talk about it and get some friendly advice and perspective of those who had been there before us.
Hope you and yours are well

Mamak, it's so good to hear from you! Did your son start off in Civil Engineering, or did he switch majors at some point? For some reason, I thought he was studying computer science... In any case, I know Civil Engineering is a great field to be in right now, and CE's with experience are in great demand, plus those jobs aren't likely to get outsourced, so your son should be "set" for his career! Hopefully, things are going well for your daughter, too. If you didn't look through other the sections of the forum, you might have missed this recent thread, in which a number of older, familiar members gave updates: millermom.proboards.com/thread/14536/checking

So glad to hear from you! Congratulations to you and your son - what an amazing accomplishment. My son is finishing his senior year at UMass studying Natural Conservation Resources with a concentration in Urban Forestry. I agree - this was an important place to receive the support and information needed to help get through those public school years. Thank you for updating us and for being there for us all those years.

DOING THE HAPPY DANCE TODAY!!!!!!! FEELING GRATEFUL and Totally thanking my lucky stars for finding you all way back when I did. I know that my son's graduation TODAY as a CIVIL ENGiNEER from CSUF may not have happened without the many smart and caring people I encountered here. I hope all are doing well! B is working for a company that is redoing the 405 Freeway in Orange County. He is designing the footings for the bridges they are widening.

Congratulations!! So happy for you and B. DS graduated last week from UMass Amherst. He can't wait to begin working for the tree company he has interned with the last 3 years. I agree, I am so grateful for the support and advice from this community. Never could have made it without you. Wish we could pop some champagne and enjoy a toast together.

I have said that I was very grateful to Schwab for creating that website and the community of really helpful folks there. I learned a lot of really useful things that helped with my son first and then my daughter. I remember learning about assistive technology and getting help with SAT/ACT accommodations, among other things. Thanks to you all. I tried and still try to give back, though my knowledge is getting dated.
