I thought I would throw in a reminder that FAFSA can be a blessing as your kids get older. My kids have been slowly going thru college with lapses here and there for many reasons.
If one uses your state department of Rehabilitation to aid with your students training, then by law, the FAFSA MUST be filled out as the state is payer of last result and must know that the possibility of grants or scholarships have been explored. If the student is on SSI then community college tuition is usually waived.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised that when filling out FAFSA for my 24 year old son J for the next fall, FAFSA knew he would be turning 25 in November and did not count mine or dh's income. He received enough money to cover his State college tuition and books and then some. All students are considered "independent" at age 25 and parents income is no longer counted, only the students income is calculated.
Finally, some positive reinforcement for the slower students!
