DS is home after his first semester at UMass. Grades are not in, but by all accounts, I think he had a very successful first semester. He got along with his roommate, made friends, maintained his budget and did well and enjoyed his classes.
What worked? I think much success is due to his self advocacy and self knowledge. He signed up with the disability center and reached out to all his professors. He chose a hands-on major. This allowed him to balance out the rigor of some of the tougher science classes with the more enjoyable and less "bookish" technical courses.
I am forever grateful for the knowledge and support I received here and at Schwab Learning in the early, dark, scary days. Without the encouragement from you, I am not sure if I would have been able to navigate school and special ed in a positive way. Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Ditto the above! It's a wonderful feeling to see the "fruits of your labor" maturing, and I'm sure it makes this Holiday season extra joyful! Hopefully your daughter is enjoying equal success in her life!

Really good to hear that. In Yiddish, we kvell at this kind of good news.
Both of my kids continue to do well. ShawSon is here for a few days and ShawD is working as an RN while finishing up her masters to become an NP. As the one Jewish nurse, she has been working most of the 24th, 25th and 26th, but she met us for a late movie on the 24th and will join us tonight when she gets off her job.

Shawbridge, my son's new girlfriend (the one he's been dating for almost a year) isn't Jewish, but she's also a nurse who has had to work the night of the 24th into the 25th, and again tonight the 26th. She's not happy about it. Apparently the hospital she's at is experiencing quite a nurse's shortage. She's hoping to eventually work day shift in an O.R., however her current manager is refusing to allow any transfers to other departments. I wonder if your daughter is seeing similar problems in your area?

Mamak, nice to "see" you again, and congrats on your son's achievements. Presumably your daughter is continuing to do well, too?

Thanks Healthy11, DD is working up in SF. Some difficulties with her that I can't publicly discuss.

Mamak, sorry to hear of your daughter's "bumps in the road" but I know she's a resilient individual, and I hope things look up for her soon.
Believe it or not, I was thinking of you just the other day, when I recalled that you once placed a group order for a Brainology memory training program, which I never got my son to use. As I get older and feel like MY memory isn't as sharp as it used to be, I wonder if the link to it would still work, and I should give it a try??

Congrats Michellea....I never doubted that your son would do well. He was so lucky to have your support and guidance and he got the best sort of interventions and help him shine and reach his potential. How wonderful.
BTW, Shawbridge, my daughter is now a working NP. She is fortunate to be working in an that has regular hours. Our daughter was very happy to no longer have to do shifts or deal with shift schedules. The doctor she works with is away on vacation this week visiting family overseas and I recently learned that our daughter is the on-call provider all week. Fortunately it is not a type of medicine where there are a lot of emergencies so she said it has not been too bad. Does your daughter have a branch of medicine she is leaning toward?
Our middle son was home but left yesterday to go back to school. He spent most of his visit working on some research problem. I gather there is an academic dispute between our son's advisor and another professor (the person who founded the field) in the department about what the field our son is studying should be. The question they are disputing has deep philosophical roots about what science is and how knowledge is acquired and created. It is all well and good because our son feels his advisor is on the right side. But it is frustrating because the university needs to hire another faculty member and because of this dispute nobody can agree to who to hire.
My youngest (the musician) is just continuing to do that music thing he does....practice practice practice.....perform perform...practice practice practice.

Hi Healthy, I just saw your post. I have no idea of the Brainology codes at this point. It was so long ago and I have probably gone through 2 dead computers since then. Have you tried luminosity? I hear it is helpful for memory but I have not tried it. I will PM you about dd.

I haven't tried any of the "brain training" programs yet, but if I get more time, I might. (I kept thinking that maybe it was just stress/overload when I was dealing with my aunt's eldercare issues, but unfortunately my memory still isn't as good as it used to be....I guess it's not surprising, considering my age!)
