My son will be 21 next September and am currently trying to find a doctor to take over his ADHD treatment since he will be aging out of his Pediatrian's practice. For those who have been in this situation before, which type of practice did you move your kid/s to ie. Primary Care, Neurologist, Psychiatrist etc.
Since my son's case is not complicated and he has been on the same meds for the lst 15 yrs or so, I would like his primary care doctor to prescibe it. The problem is how do I find out which primary care doctor is familiar and is comfortable to treat adult ADHD (since he is no consider a child).
Your advice is much appreciated.

Although my son initially saw a psychiatrist for diagnosis and the process of ADHD medication trials, his pediatrician was willing to take over routine medication management. We maintained the relationship with his psychiatrist anyway, because my son seemed to have episodes of panic/anxiety in addition to the ADHD. Nevertheless, when my son was aging out of his Pediatrician's office, we did ask the Pediatrician if he could recommend an adult primary care Dr. who might be comfortable handling a young adult with ADHD. It turned out to be a moot point because my son accepted a job over an hour away from where we're at, and so my son ended up finding a new Primary Care Dr. out in that area who was part of the insurance network he got through his workplace; he's no longer under our coverage. My son did say that his new Primary Care Dr. also volunteered to write his ADHD prescriptions as needed, but my son declined because his original Psychiatrist has weekend appointments, and so my son can still see him on an annual basis.
Bottom line, I'd start by asking your son's current pediatrician if he can recommend an adult Primary Care Dr. There are likely other kids with ADHD who've had to transition out of his practice before, and maybe he can look up where their files were sent to (which new Dr's took over their care.)

We asked my pediatrician for a recommendation for a GP when I hit 21 - but he said if I wanted to ever do meds for my ADHD - ask my neurologist. I'd suggest finding an neurologist that specializes in ADHD - mine does ADHD, Epilepsy, Muscular Issues, and Fibromyalgia.
