Rep. Bill Cassidy's House Resolution 456 and Rep. Joyce Beatty's House Resolution 623 have been reviewed by Drs. Sally & Bennett Shaywitz. In January 2014, Rep. Bill Cassidy introduced House Resolution 456, which focuses directly on the scientific basis of dyslexia and its educational implications. House Resolution 623 was presented by Rep. Joyce Beatty in June 2014. This resolution mentions dyslexia, but appears to be much more general, rather than specific to dyslexia. Sometimes it helps to use the words of professionals in those IEP meetings and in discussions with those who don't understand. Like: "Dyslexics have a reading impairment, not a thinking impairment." So many misconstrue why persons with Dyslexia struggle with some areas of learning and not others. dyslexia.yale.edu/HRes456vsHRes623.html

I do not concur with Rep. Beatty's Resolution. One can have Dyslexia and a processing deficit which can impair thinking and her resolution started to smack of an IEP team trying to bifurcate the issues until there was nothing left but "the kid needs to try harder". Ugh - Toss it in my opinion. It's worthless whereas Rp. Cassidy's actually has a call to action. I wonder if I delve into Rep. Beatty's background would I find out why she is really not calling for any action in her bill? Backed by teacher's unions perhaps??? Just saying, it's not worth much. I hope Rep. Cassidy's Resolution 456 moves forward. Thank you Drs. Shaywitz.
