Our neighbor, 12 yr old boy, just started meds about 6 mo ago and even though he 's been on 3 different meds, I swear his anxiety has increased , no matter what med they use. Is this a comm side effect?

This is from an ADDitude article: www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/957-2.htmlOTHER SIDE EFFECTS. If your child has a problem with anger or suffers from anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, taking a stimulant can make symptoms worse. (Sometimes, you may be unaware that your child has such a disorder until he starts taking a stimulant.) In any of these situations, stopping the stimulant should solve the problem.

Yes, stimulant medication can make anxiety worse. Also , if your child has sleep disorder, Restless Leg Syndrome, which occurs at a higher incidence with ADHD, the stimulant medication can also make RLS worse. Of concern, research is showing an increase in cardiovascular events with stimulant medication. In Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, again often misdiagnosed as ADHD, underlying and undiagnosed birth defects can be present, including cardiac defects. The above is why the diagnosis of a FASD can be so important when using psychotropic medication. And, hypertension can also be a problem with stimulant medication, again found with FASD, especially in adolescence and adulthood.
