I heard a news segment earlier today, where they were interviewing the founder of www.taxmama.com ~ she apparently will answer tax questions for free if you post them on her site. One of the questions asked was about whether someone who sends their child to a private preschool can deduct the tuition, and the answer was yes, pre-K costs can be applied towards the Child and Dependent Care Credit. Once they are in kindergarten or above, the private school costs are no longer deductible. However, if part of the costs include after-school care, that is deductible for children under the age of 13, and if you have a child with special needs, then amounts beyond the Child Care credit might be applicable as a medical deduction. (See instructions to Form 2441 at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i2441.pdf ) Additional sites like www.nesca-news.com/2013/04/the-irs-offers-help-to-parents-of.html and www.tacanow.org/family-resources/tax-strategies-for-parents-of-kids-with-special-needs/ also have tax information for parents of students with special needs.
