My DS (age 12, with ADHD, and probably some learning disabilities also) now has a prescription for Metadate CD (10 mg). Background on his situation is in this thread: www.millermom.proboards.com/thread/13521/new-appreciate-comments-test-resultsWe had an initial appointment with a child/adolescent psychiatrist a few weeks ago and went over some of his history. At a follow-up appointment we talked a bit about meds, and she suggested the Metadate CD. Just waiting now on the results of his EKG before filling the prescription. Anyway, from what the psychiatrist said, and from reading online, I see that there is a generic version of this drug out now, as of about a year ago. I'm sure the prescription will be filled with the generic (since this will be DS's first experience with any ADHD med, it's hard to make an argument to insurance that he needs the brand-name version). I'm wondering if anyone here has had experience with the generic forms vs. brand name? I did do a search, but didn't find much, probably because the generic hasn't been out that long. I guess I'm nervous just about DS starting these meds for the first time; the added uncertainty of taking a generic makes me a little more nervous.

ceratops-- I had similar questions about the generic of Ritalin LA. But dd's experience so far with the generic has been fine. millermom.proboards.com/thread/13613/ritalin-la-genericI realize Metadate CD has a different delivery system than Ritalin LA. My advice is to try it and see how it works. If you note any difficult side effects that don't ease over time, ask the doctor about whether those side effects are unique to methylphenidate or unique to the delivery system used by the generic form of Metadate CD.

My son who has been on Metadate CD for about 12 yrs, did not do well on the generic. This was the one medication that had very little side effects on him. When he went on generic he had sleep, appetite and most disturbingly anger issues.
Your child may do ok on generic like SharonF's.
You coould always request that your doctor write Dispense As Written on the script, so you get the brandname. I think it is always best to try the brandname when it is the first time on a medication.
