Oh, Hopeforall, I did not mean that I thought your son might have FASD. I read this book, and simply wanted to communicate to empeg1 that I found it really interesting and wondered if she had read it. So, I posted the comment here, inappropriately. Later, I thought better, and sent her a PM about the book. Empeg1 is the best informed one about this topic. I have no basis suggesting this about your son, as I have read one book, Damaged ANgels. But, I do agree that considering FASD in any adopted child is well worth the time and energy.

hope - I hope that the new school is supportive of you and your ds. From what you shared, the old school and teacher did not seem to understand some of your son's very basic needs and could not embrace an appropriate way to teach him and adjust to his needs. Often it makes sense to re-direct our energies to a new environment that has at least a possibility of adjusting appropriately. I understand why you left the old school and hope the new one works out.
Regarding FASD, RAD and all the possibilities - it is always wise to keep your mind and eyes open in an effort to find the best approaches and treatments. I hope that as times moves on and your son matures, you will be able to find the key to helping him and the people that will be willing to use the key. Take care and keep us posted.

Thanks Everyone DS is doing very well in his new school. His acting out behaviour at home has dramatically decreased. However he dissolves into tears easily. Not sure why or if this is a good sign. It is easier to manage. Disturbing non the less.

I am very happy with Ray 's new school. He is working at his ability level. This alone is reducing much of Ray 's stress. My stress is reduced since I no longer have to constantly e-mail teachers social workers school psychologist and administrators advocating and educating school staff regarding ds needs.

That's wonderful. How did you find the school? What is the focus of the school? If you would like to share, please do.

Saint Joseph Academy Joliet sjsacademyjoliet.com/ds is in a multi grade classroom 1st thru 3rd grade. There are 14 students in his class. It is a Montessori philosophy where each child is grouped according to their abilities and skill level. However they also use standard curriculum. Some students have disabilities some are typical students. one of the students is a good reader. They leave the classroom and sits in an office with a an adult present and the other student helps ds read. ds is also part of a small group reading lesson which is teacher led. Ray is capable of doing third grade level math. However he does not have a good understanding of place value so he is doing 2 digit place value.

I was reading through this old thread. Ray is in his second year at St. Joseph Academy. In this environment Ray is making progress socially, emotionally, and cognitively. He is doing third grade reading and math. A couple times this year DS completed assignments independently (this is huge progress for DS). He has needed an adult sitting next to him in order to complete assignments. Even when he knows the material and completes the material ind, he still needed an adult sitting by him.
. If something in the environment scares him he seeks out a trusted adult. DS gets scared during fire drills and needs to walk with an adult. Well there was a fire drill and DS walked right up to the principal and said, "I want to walk with you." Good self advocating. He also has a good relationship with his teacher and the jr high teacher. There were many times when DS made his needs known to a trusted adult.
St. Joes is a small school with a family atmosphere. I volunteer there 2 days a week. So communication with teachers is ongoing. St Joseph Academy is having a Capital Campaign to raise money to buy the building we are currently renting. Here is the Go Fund Me link if anyone would like to make a donation.
