My sister has a house in Downeast Maine, a stone's throw from Canada. She found out the hard way about roaming charges - even when she proactively checked with AT&T prior. Ultimatly, she got the charges abated (they were able to see that she called and was given shaky advice), but it illustrated just how easy it is to roam to another country, even if you don't leave the US.... Needless to say, when we paid her a visit, we put our phones on airport and shut down the cell.

I was just in Canada and my phone warned me about roaming charges. Texting is the cheapest option--.20 per text and that is without calling ahead. I think internet access is particularly dangerous. A colleague racked up a $1000 bill in three weeks in Australia and that was supposedly with arrangements made ahead of time. Her company is trying to sort it out now.

yes and also be aware of other charges because things are done differently. Daughter was given a place to stay in an apartment in Europe. She had internet and just assumed that it came with the accommodations. There was no log-in or warning about charges. Turns out the internet in the apartment was billed according to data that was used. So all those movies my daughter watched at night ended up costing her a small fortune. Live and learn.

If you travel overseas alot always get a Global phone with hotspot (for internet), then you can buy the local (voice and data)plan which is much cheaper than using the international plans from here. I am personally waiting to see if the Samsumg Galaxy 4s (with Verizon) has the SIM card, so I can buy the local plan in Singapore. I know the iphone can be used overseas. Where I live, if i am anywhere near Lake Erie or Ontario, my phone warns me of roaming charges. I have to turn off the roaming on my phone. My son goes to Canada a lot, and he has to turn his roaming off too.

They won't give you the code to unlock the phones SIM card capabilities unless you pay them for the phone outright, or complete a 2 year contract.

bros, you are right. However, I have been a Verizon customer for many years, so they will unlock it for me.
