Over Thanksgiving break, my son made his decision about which school he'll attend next year. He had three choices: Gow, Wolcott, and staying at his current ld school which now has a high school. He chose to go to Gow and I am very pleased.
My son interviewed at Gow early October and at Wolcott in November; both went well. At Gow, the Headmaster accepted him at the interview and told him that they wanted him to come. Fortunately, he didn't have to make a decision right away. In fact, because my son was so busy at school to even think about high schools and I was going out of the country, the Headmaster at his current school requested an extension for our response to December 1 which we got.
At first, my son wasn't sure about their six-day schedule-they have Saturday morning classes, the two and half hour study halls, and having to wear a coat and tie, but was able to get beyond his reservations to make the decision.
I am just relieved that he feels ownership for his decision.
Wolcott School is a new high school for ld/adhd students which will open next fall in Chicago. I have met with and talked to the founding head of the school whose vision for the school I share, but I understand my son's not being able to envision what the school might be like just by touring the half-finished school building and without knowing who the other students will be or who the teachers will be. I've been frustrated myself with their decision to not hold open houses and community meetings for interested parents/students until the building is finished early next year.

Congratulations on your son's decision. It sounds like he thought hard about this and made the choice that was right for him.

I'm sure your son will do well at Gow, and we do hope you'll share more about his personal experiences there as time passes!

Hsmom, my son's friend attended Gow for their summer program a few years back and raved about how helpful it was. This kid had been struggling in school all his life. I told his father to send him, unfortunately they did it only for a summer, he has since graduated from school but I don't know if he ever went to college, my guess would be not. Anyway, I digress, he did tell me that he got a lot out of it and they understood how he learned. So I hope your son will do well there too. I live very close to Gow, so if you are ever in the neighbourhood, let me know.

Thank you Jisp, Healthy, Michellea, and Mayleng,
I've been told that although the students really need to step up on their academics, the boys from my son's school do well at Gow.
And, Mayleng, I look forward to meeting you. I don't think I will be going out until August, but after that I expect to be out there several times each year. The area is lovely. I've gotten to know East Aurora a bit.
