My son's very bright girlfriend is a first generation college student and is from a low income family. She is solely responsible for her expenses (tuition, fees, room board, EVERYTHING) I worry very much about how the current state of our national education policy and how the burden of student debt will limit her life choices.

This is one reason we must resist the current policy spearheaded by Betsy DeVos.

I do not think she received the best guidance- I tried to encourage her to apply to well endowed private schools, but she was reluctant. She graduated at the top 5% of her class and had excellent sat scores- she is at UMass Amherst in the honors college. She has received a lot of grants, but I know she may have received close to full boat had she applied to other schools. That said, I know it would be difficult at an ivy or top tier college with a limited budget. A very real advantage of a state university is the economic diversity. I just hope she continues to receive the financial aid and the interest rates on her loans do not sky rocket.
