Was just watching Live with Regis and Kelly, Uma Thurman mentioned in passing that she was dyslexic and was not a good student.

There are so many creative people that have LD's, especially in the arts.

I love when people in the public spot light bring attention to their differences. It makes people see that our kids are not dumb just different. It also amazes me to see just how many dyslexics there are and how many are successful:)

OK, so now we need her to give an account of how she was treated as a child (bet she went to private school). Maybe she could get all "Kill Bill" on some of the people treating our kids badly.

What troubles me about Jennifer Aniston's revelation is that she attributes her diagnosis to an eye exam - fueling the misconception that dyslexia is visual in nature and about reversals.
I do believe that kids that receive support can be successful - I worry about those that get lost in the system. How many of those living in poverty or are in jail had LD's that were unaddressed?

Michellea, I understand your concern about articles that misconstrue the complicated nature of dyslexia. On the other hand, whenever a "well-known" personality reveals a disability, I think it does "catch the attention" of the general public, especially those who might otherwise have dismissed LD's as something that "only stupid, unsuccessful people deal with." Thinking back, it's been awhile since Millermom's forum has had a poster talking about Irlen lenses and other eye-related items, but for some, vision issues are apparently an indication of dyslexia. With regards to your question of "How many of those living in poverty or are in jail had LD's that were unaddressed?" I found the figures staggering (up to 70% with ED's or LD's, according to www.wrightslaw.com/info/jj.index.htm )
