Hi all,
Today is te big day. We have a meeting with the school about DS's testing. Mostly, I believe to get paperwork signed & target where he should be tested.
Anyway, I'm nervous. Pray I can keep it together (composure-no crying, or being impolite) during the meeting.
I'll post a note later about how the meeting went.

Well, I'm back.
We signed the paperwork to have him tested. They are going to do a whole battery of tests on him, but the focus will be to find out why he is failing math. They were happy to get the Scottish Rite results & recommendations, it gave them a place to start.
They are going to do a full language workup on him. They will be getting a new test in the next 5 days that is geared towards the 9-12 age group. It has more subtests, but helps pinpoint problem areas.
The other tests will happen within the next couple of weeks. Here's hoping we find something out.

, hopefully, it will point to where his problem area is.

my3texans - are they doing any exec functioning type testing? The Woodcock Cognitive Battery (not Woodcock Achievement) is the only test name I can remember that does this.
The reason I ask is twofold. It will give insight on the way he learns - memory, planning and organization problems. The second is if he is determined not LD by whatever standards they're using, if used and interpreted correctly, may offer documented "proof" for OHI sp ed classification.
Not asking this to get you nuts - just something to bear in mind.
Or, maybe said and handled better with the school, find out what/if any guidelines for OHI criteria. My district continues to have a hard time with their thinking - that kids have to show the old LD discrepency for OHI consideration too - sometimes an apples/oranges thing.
A kid with ADHD can have LD or learning differences that stems from their ADHD.

The WISC IV was mentioned, but she said that Scottish Rite did an IQ test so she may not start with an IQ test. She said she would probably start with an achievement type test first. She also mentioned she would be doing some sort of math based testing as well.
Not sure about executive function testing, but I bet I can ask the Spec Ed person from the school about it.
The only thing that kinda bothered me was that his Scottish Rite test showed 105 for ability & an 81 in one area(reading based) & as a result he wouldn't qualify for services. What I did not stress(too much info coming at me that I was trying to process) was that Scottish Rite only tests for reading based problems, there is no math testing done.
They did ask for a Dr.'s DX for the ADD, which I am now waiting on the Dr.'s office for, there wasn't one in his file.
I don't see any reason why I can't find out the names of all the tests he going to take. I may can find it out on the state's website, they have all the state forms we filled out there.

I don't know what kind of IQ test Scottish Rite uses. Maybe SR has their own or an abridged IQ test which is why the school wants to do another. The two big name IQ tests are WISC IV and Stanford Binet with WISC more widely used. The same IQ test can't be used within one year's time of each other bc it invalidates the score. Another IQ test will give you more info from the subtest scores so that is good. Suggestions - Consider calling the sp ed person first and inquire about exec functioning type tests and OHI (might as well get the names of the other tests if they didn't give them to you). In the meantime you can read up on what the tests measure in preparation for his results. I'm jealous if your state has a decent sp ed site that parents can access - my state's is not that great. Secondly, call the doc for the dx letter. My dd's doc included things like executive functioning problems often common with ADHD and mentioned her history of learning differences, etc. My dd's doc was well aware of our school situation and dd's history so worded the letter with that in mind. OK, I'll shut up now! Good job. ;D

I talked to the doc's office, they are going to have him put something together for the school. I also made an appointment for Monday for a check up. It was mentioned that it sounded like his meds (strattera) was either no longer working for him or was wearing off(as in he's grown & the dose needs to be upped).
If you go to the State of Alabama's Dept of Education website, buried the sections link is a page for Special Ed in Alabama. Once in there, you can find a file called "Mastering the Maze" it is a roughly 200 page file that goes through every step of the eval process for the state. It has all the forms to be filled out, & explains some of the programs. I need to get hubby to load it on his USB drive & take it to work so he can print it out easier & quicker than our printer does. Of course, today my browser has a mind of it's own & I can't get the thing to open -- for some reason I have a desire to get a bigger hammer.
Anyway, check it out sometime. It may offer some info or insight to the process, even though some parts vary from state to state.
