Just got the notice that we are to meet with the school about my son's testing. They sent a copy of my rights for "Special Education under IDEA" for me to read.
Several of the school's people are supposed to be in attendance: Spec. Ed. teacher, his teacher, Rep to interpret the laws & results of an evaluation, Local Ed. Agency Rep(me thinks this will be the principal).
The form states as the purpose of the meeting is to determine if referral requires evaluation. Since it is a parent requested eval, he should recieve testing.
Does anyone have any tips, tidbits, stories or advice about these types of meetings? Anything you could think of that I should ask for or about prior to having him tested. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanx, Georgia

Have with you as much of his classwork as possible to make the case. Make a list of all the issues/concerns. Did you write to them formally requesting an evaluation? You can also get more input from the members at www.schwablearning.org/message_boards/index.asp?r=281

Yes, I requested, in writing, to have him evaluated. The state requires 6 weeks of observation/intervention prior to testing. That all happened prior tot he Christmas break.
My son has mentioned that the school did a basic vision test & a hearing test on him before the Christmas break as well.
I'm hoping to receive the formal written recommendations from his Dyslexia test before this meeting.
I'll head over to Schwab after the kids head to school.
Thanx, Georgia

If for some reason they deny doing the evaluation, ask them for Prior Written notice as to the reason why they are denying to help him. This will make them take you seriously because they hate to put down formally their reasons.

Thanx, I appreciate it.
It just struck me the way the form letter was written that it could be possible for them to either deny it or at the vary least try to talk us out of it. It may have to do with the form & the choices the writer had to choose from as a reason for the meeting. The choice picked was to discuss whether evals were needed.
I will keep that in mind about them putting it in writing about why they think what they think.
Thanx,
Georgia

Georgia - saw your post on schwab. Mention there what state you live in. There are a few southern states that are not know as 'progressive' shall we say and that might be important.
