I found that very helpful. I'm not sure my son will need AT but I would like to see him better able to use the computer for assignments, etc. as allowed by his current 504. So far, we haven't really used the computer for school because, although he is great with games ;-), he is slow with typing sentences. Are there any particular keyboarding programs that would be worth trying to buy for a 4th grader?

For a 4th grader, one suggestion "Type To Learn". However, there are a lot of choices out there. If you browse through all the dicussion on that link, you'll find a lot more suggestions like, "Read, Type and Learn", Mavis Beacon, Sponge Bob Typing, Garfield Typing, Jumpstart Typing and so on. Mabe your son can help you pick the program, then he'll be more motivated to use it.

oh, the other program is called "Read, Write and Type" (not Read Type and Learn).
I'm glad you found that link helpful.

LEP,
Thanks so much!! This looks great. Can't wait to read it all in detail. Our PT has suggested twice that we start using Dragon speak at home. THe rest of the team just went mute. Go figure. Last year the R.R. used Kurzweil with our son during lang arts and reading time. They had so many bugs it wasn't worth it. Too bad too because the demo I saw on line was awesome. Well, There is time left this year. Lots going on this week and we will be on a long trip off island so I will tell all about what we decide with AT thru school or home after we get back. Thanks so much! Snorkeler

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I didn't read enough of the thread ( I read several pages ;-). I think it was Mavis Beacon that we tried before but he was not remotely interested in it. MAybe, if I can find it, he will be more interested now. I really don't understand why they don't teach typing or keyboarding or whatever you choose to call it when they start teaching them to use computers. It seems more logical to me but I'm sure there is areason.
Thanks again.

Hey I went to each of the typing sites and the one I liked most was Typer Shark. It seems to be for boys more than girls, but I dont have a girl so maybe they'd like it too. Happy typing! Snorkeler
