I have a friend who moved to the Boston area last winter. The school is preparing to do a Child Study on her twice-exceptional daughter --- most definitely gifted, almost certainly severely ADHD and possibly other things going on...
Can anyone tell me anything about Mass. laws? How "friendly" are they to parents, if at all?
My friend is loving Mass. The only thing that has bummed her out is there don't seem to be any gifted services at all. Now she is wondering about other services. If anyone could shed any light I would appreciate it.

VaMom, schwablearning.org has a great message board where you might want to post this if you don't get responses here. Also, our old mutual friend Hollyb3... is up in MA and her sons have been doing fine in the MA sp ed system. I know there is a decent website/parent group called concord special ed or something. I think that is out of MA (Mayleng the links goddess I'm sure has). Overall from reading boards over the years, MA seems like a decent state (vs others that are notoriously chronically difficult).
I don't think many states do gifted all that well. Parents of gifted kids have similar complaints we do for our ADHDer that are not LD getting them the right educational program. My impression is that's all over the country.
If your friend hasn't explored ldonline.org has good info links about twice exceptionals. Sharon F might have good dual exception links too.
Boston Children's Hospital is supposed to be great so your friend has a great fallback position if she doesn't like the school's efforts.

d,
I found the link for that Concord group and sent it to her. It sounds like they are a tremendously well-organized group. Thanks!
Are you still reading the other boards? Anything new and good over there?

HI VAmom, I live in Plymouth Mass. My son was tested at New England Medical Center in Boston. (also known as Floating Hospital). I dont know where your friend lives in Mass. but I have had great results in Plymouth Schools. Both my nieces were in the Gifted and Talented Programs in their schools too. My son has inattentive ADHD and we have had great help with all his teachers. In fact this is his first year in middle school and he made the honor roll!!!! I cant believe it. He has a 504 plan in place. The schools were wonderful with testing and they suggested that we have a 504 plan in place.
