Well, Its that time of year again. School starts next Thursday. My questionis ... Should my son get re-tested.?? He has ADHD and SID and has a Disability in written expression.
Here's the scenario:
Tested in 2nd grade. Learned about SID and written expression disability. He just barely was NOT labeled LD . He has IEP under OHI. None of this has changed or will change. He will be starting middle school this year. So far, the school is putting me off as to when we will have our "transitional IEP meeeting". At the end of the school year, it was stated that we would have to have a re-eval. on whether he still needed services. The Sp-Ed coordinator for the school said we can waiver this due the fact that he will probably still require services. I think he needs re-testing. I think that his "abilities "have changed since 2nd grade and I don't think he has gotten better, but worse. Especially in Written expression. Does the testing change as they age? The written abilities of a 6th grader have to be so much different than a 2nd grader. Another question... Do school systems test for things like ASpergers or is that a medical issue? I'm strongly thinking that my son has this or NVLD. What do I need to ask for ?
Sandy, if I am not mistaken, the school should do an evaluation every 3 years. If he is going into Middle School, and they have not done any re-eval, I would write to them requesting a re-evaluation and you should ask for a confirmed date of the transitional IEP meeting. I would do the request in WRITING. If it is not in writing it did not happen.
Things DO change. We were told by a psychologist 4 years ago that dd had ADHD combined. We've been treating for ADHD since then with a variety of meds. A month ago, we were told that no, she doesn't have ADHD. She's anxious.
Her 1st round of testing indicated that she had a NVLD. Second round it had disappeared. Our current psych thinks that her anxiety caused inconsistent test results.
