Hi Everyone, I havent been on lately. Things have been crazy with all the end of the school year activities. Well I went to my son Chris' Fifth Grade Night at his school. He is going to middle school next year. He has inattentive ADHD and has struggled quite a bit. Both fourth and fifth grade have been great! He has worked his tail off and really done well. He always has to work twice as hard just to keep up. He is currently taking metadate CD 40mg. He was on concerta for quite a while and did great too except his appetite was no good. Ok now for the good news... We went to the school and the fifth grade put on a concert. Then awards were given, well Chris got the Silver Presidents Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had no idea he was getting it and either did he. Talk about a proud moment. He was smiling from ear to ear. He was voted The student who showed the most improvement in an academic year. He also got an award in art as well. Two years ago I never saw myself here. I cried all the time I felt so helpless. He struggled and hated himself!!! It was rough. Since then Chris has been on medication and he has a routine that we all follow for homework and certain things. This has worked so well for him. The 504 plan has helped as well. We also use lots of yellow post it notes!!!! Sorry for babbling. I just had to share. Thanks for listening.

I couldn't have been prouder and couldn't help it - I cried at the ceremony.) Good for him. Please don't thank us for listening - thank you for sharing the great news... Please tell Chris frontclap*

yes I cried!!! at first I was in shock but then the eyes started filling up. I think my husband was more emotional than anyone. Its nice to see the ones who have to work twice as hard and still struggle get recognized for their efforts.

Congratulations!!!
That is wonderful!!
Last year at our son's (ADD and dyslexic) 5th grade awards he received second place for the whole school in reading points! I cried too. Other's think it is a good achievement but "we" know the whole story and that is even better!!!

Great news jwm! That's a great accomplishment for all of you...I was coming here to post something similar about my chris (also just finishing 5th grade). Many of you remember last year at this time we struggled with the decision of putting C in a self-contained classroom (and having him switch schools) for 5th grade. We did make the switch and boy do we feel like we did the right thing for him. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this success will carry over into next year for middle school.
Anyway, we went to C's award ceremony today...and were not informed that he was getting anything (I knew he would get one for band participation, but that was it). Imagine my surprise when he got called up for excellence in Science (this was extra-special because this is one of the classes that he was mainstreamed for so he was in "competition" with the reg. ed. class), excellence in reading (this was from the special ed. teacher...she gave each child in the class an achievement award for their strength...C's was the only one w/excellence)...plus, he got the President's Award for Educational Achievement (as in George W.) It was definitely a proud mommy moment! He also got a perfect attendance award (he's been waiting for this since K...the old school didn't give out awards for perfect attendance b/c they were afraid parents would send their kids to school sick)! It was a great feeling for all of us!
I even had some parents come up to us to congratulate Chris! Now, it's officially summer vacation!

Lurk.. I am so happy to hear Chris is doing soooooo well. Good for him, and good for you and your hubby for making the tough decision. This thread keeps getting better and better. I love it when one of our kids do well and find success. It gives others hope.

thanks for your kind words, Mayleng! It is a good feeling!
and, for all of you just starting out your struggles with ADHD, we've been struggling through this since C was in kindergarten...we've been to countless doctors, all the meds until we finally hit on the combination that worked the best for C...plus, all the support we've had in real life and cyber-life! Yes, there is hope for our kids...keep fighting!!!

Hi lurknomore, I am so happy for you and your family!! I think Chris was overjoyed over the award but when he saw George Busch' name signed on it he was over the top!! My parents were there and they were very happy for him. They saw my brother and sisters struggle and myself and they know how tough it can be. I know now that I must have the inattentive ADHD. I am so happy things have gone so well with your son. Enjoy every moment of this summer!!

Congratulations to both Chris's and their parents!!! Their great attitudes and willingness to work hard will really pay off in middle school. happy*
I am glad to see that the schools give awards for most improved. The private school that my two older kids went to would never have done that.
d, thank you for the note. Your point had not occurred to me, but I can definitely see what you mean. This is the fun part of the roller coaster ride. It would be more rewarding to have my ADHD child win such an award (I could cry just thinking about it) than to have one of my other two kids win something because of how much my ds would have to overcome to do so. Man, I should have had my kids younger - roller coasters are hard on the heart!
