My son has been at a small private Christian school since kindergarten. He will start fourth grade next school year. We have had so many problems with my son and the school this year. He has been labeled, and since the school is so small all the teachers hear about everything he does. He always starts the new year with bad expectations from the teacher.
He had a bad bullying experience a few months ago. All the school did was make the bully apologize to my son. After speaking with an assistant principle from a local public school we found out the bully would have been suspended if it had occurred at her school . I don't feel he is protected at his school.
Anyway, I am wondering about an IEP. I have no idea about this! My son makes very good grades and is very intelligent. His problem is constant talking and disorganization. The private school really pushes being independent. The teacher will not remind them to take books home, study for test, etc. Once it is written in their planner that is it, it is totally their responsibility. Is it this way in most public schools? I really don't know what "conditions" qualify for an IEP. Tomorrow we are touring a public school that we are considering sending him to. Do I mention an IEP at that time. Is it something we need to start working on now? Will it make them nervous if we mention an IEP? As you can see I have no clue!
