It has been suggested to be on other threads, based on things I have said, that I should pursue a 504 for my son. I am unsure how to go about it and even if i have enough grounds to push for it at this point. I Do know that his teacher is allowing him extra time to complete things and tried not to count timed tests in his grades. Some are given by the principal and, I guess she counts these. last year i had a list of modification or accomodations that would have helped but, since his teacher was providing them, I did not pursue it. I'm not sure that he needs all those things this year but I'm not sure that just the time issue will pursuade them to consider the 504.
I found this list of possible accomodations(on Schwab) but wonder if any of you receive other accomodations that i may not have considered.
Accommodations that may be used, but are not limited to, include:
Highlighted textbooks Extended time on tests or assignments Peer assistance with note-taking Frequent feedback Extra set of textbooks for home use Computer aided instruction Enlarged print Positive reinforcements Behavior intervention plans Rearranging class schedules Visual aids Preferred seating assignments Taping lectures Oral testing Individual contracts
Thanks, Kathy

My thoughts if the teacher is already adapting somethings. And you think its going to be needed next year.
Call the principal and request a 504. Find out what all they need to look at this.
It should be a diagnosis that qualifies for 504. LIke the doctor stating that he/she has ADHD/ADD. That even with meds he/she will need accomodations.
That the quality of work needs these accomodations to help in school.
Not sure if your list missed anything. But was helping organize notes and making sure all assignments written down on it.

Definitely get one. My sons teacher this year used to be a special ed teacher, and she strongly encouraged us to have one for my son. She said she was doing the accommodations, but he needed the protection while in his specials (music, art, gym, etc.) In addition, he should have it in place in elementary school b/c evidently its much hard in upper grades to get one.
Just request one from your principal and teacher, and provide your doctors diagnosis.

I'm sure I can get the doctor to write something about the diagnosis and i know the teacher says she has been giving him extra time, etc. Should I push just for one accomodation? I feel like there are other things that can help him but not sure what.

I told the school before spring break (which was this week) that I wanted to get a 504. They were going to tell the counselor to call me after the break. This is not the school where he was tested for SLD or where we did the Connor's Scale. WHat is the normal process for getting a 504? Will we have to repeat all that or can they use whawt we already have? Just wondering what to expect to happen next.

Well, I think I'm talking to myself but...that's ok. Sometimes it helps to think things out. Anyway, the counselor from the school called today regarding my request for a 504 for my son. He wasn't very helpful but part of that may have been that I wasn't sure exactly what to say. I felt like i got tounge-tied or something. I like to go into "confrontations" fully prepared and I didn't feel that way. He doesn't really think there is much to be done this close to the end of the year and with the teacher out for several weeks. By the time she gets back, there will only be 3-4 weeks left. He , of course, suggested waiting till next year. I, of course, told him that I was concerned that these things needed to be considered when placing him in a class for next year. I also told him that I was also uncertain if we would be here next year. Anyway, I'm babbling.
I wish there was someone better suited than I to say what my child would benefit from and how to go about it. I know he needs the extra time but I also feel there needs to be more structure and more attn to helping him overcome his weaknesses. I hate to say it, but I think the fact that he is passing this year has hurt him.
Oh well. He gave me another number to call for the person in the county who is over testing and govt. programs. I think he just didn't really want to talk to me anymore. I've got to decide what to say before I call her. Guess I'll plot my strategy today. Any ideas anyone?

Hi Kathy, I have some experience in 504. See if there is a parent support group in your area. In my area it is called PEP. You maybe able to find them through the school district, your state mental health or through your local CHADD. They may have an advocate or they maybe able to coach you. A paid advocate isn't out of line either. Also, that person who is over testing and gov't program - who do they work for? If they are a state agency or state funded you can contact your states CAP to get the help you need. Keep up the pressure on them to get what your son needs. You are the best advocate for him. It will payoff in the long run.
