Thanks for all the kind responses...I went to the assembly today. For the whole 5th grade (2 reg. ed. classes and the self-contained), there was a 1st place winner, 2- 2nd place winners and a 3rd place winner. Then the Teacher's Association awarded one child from each class an award for their "great" effort...C won for his class ~ a $10 gift card to Border's Bookstore (in some ways better than winning and getting a medal and a chance to go to the County Science Fair...at least for C, he is happier with a chance to go shopping)!
They took pictures of all the winners, so he may appear in the school district newspaper (that is mailed to all district residents)...I'm not sure if they'll include the Teacher's Association winners, or just have the "real" winners.

Congrats! I honestly believe that kids who may not "place," but get the "great effort" award win because they are thought of in high regards. That would be a kodak moment that would be on the fridge for a long time! g**dj*b
