I had a 504 meeting for my son today, who is adhd/ts. He is in 4th grade and the teacher recommended that we put one in place for when he goes to middle school. During the meeting the teacher mentioned that his writing is a problem (I knew this). She said she notices difficulty with him writing down his thoughts - on tests he knows the answer but can't get it down on paper. Written expression is known to be a problem with TS. I mentioned if there was any testing to determine if he has a problem with writing, and they said there was, but that if he needed help with writing we would need to have a PPT and he would be labeled as a "special education student."
Does anyone know how being labeled "spec ed" affects a child? I'm not too concerned about k-12 school, but how would this affect him during college years? Would it prevent him from going into a military school (his current dream?)
The teacher thinks that because he is so bright he may be able to work around this, and learn coping mechanisms. She said if I was against the testing, than during middle school I would have to be vigilant on his behalf in case he has problems. She knows I am a strong advocate for him, so she thinks this may work. Evidently the middle schools don't think 504's are that important ( i guess they help the special ed kids more).
I'm a little confused about which way to go. At this point we decided to see how his mastery testing results come out, and they are also starting expository writing this month, so between the two we can get a better picture of how he will cope.
Does any one have any advise on this? Thanks so much for your continued support!!!!!
