Can anyone recommend a great article about ADHD I can give to my son's teacher? My son did extremely well at the beginning of the school year. For about the past two months his behavior has not been as good. He is having problems with his impulsiveness. His teacher is convinced that he can control it since he "did so well at the beginning of the year." She said "he is purposely being disruptive and I know he can control it." When I talk to her eyes glaze over and I get nowhere with her. She would pay more attention if she had a copy of an article she could read that explains behaviors that are "normal" for an ADHD kid.

There are some very good articles at www.schwablearning.org, go to the Identifying section and type ADHD. Also some good articles can be found at www.ldonline.org and do a search for ADHD. You can take your pick.

MsMac, I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. Nothing gets to me more than a teacher who thinks she knows more about my child than I do or is too blinded by ego to realize they don't know everything about these brain disorders.
Does she even realize she is dealing with a brain disorder? I would have to ask her what kind of training she has in this field to be able to draw her conclusions. Has she even read one book about ADHD? If you find your frustration building you may want to go to the principal and discuss it with him.

MsMac, what grade is your son in? I ask because it sounds so similar to what I'm going through w/ my own son who is in the fourth grade. We have a first year teacher and things are getting worse and worse.

2pearl, my son is in 3rd grade. What types of problems is your son having at school? We really did have a great start at the school year. I hope the recent problems have just been because of excitement over Christmas and the Christmas break. I dread school starting back tomorrow. DS has started interrupting the teacher and other classmates, arguing with them and sometimes the teacher, and passing gas and burping during quiet time. His doctor would like to up his dosage of Concerta (36 mg) but wants DS to gain some weight first.

MsMac and 2Pearl, a friend of mine just posted this link and you might find it helpful to give this to your kid's teachers. It is from their own UNION. The American Federation of Teachers (the Union that represents many of the nations teachers) maintains a web site and they have this article posted. www.aft.org/pubs-reports/american_educator/issues/winter04-05/cogsci.htm

MsMac, My son is the class clown. Is constantly distracting the other kids by making them laugh (while the teacher is teaching) He forgets to raise his hand, that sort of the thing. While he was on concerta he was argumenative with his teachers but since he's been off thats not so much of an issue.
