We have a meeting at school today to discuss my 9 year old (ODD, anxiety, depression, bi-polar). I won't go into all his details as I have detailed them in other posts. Anyway, I'm sure they are going to say he will have to go to a contained classroom (which is in a different school). He has missed a lot of school (he's constantly wanting to come home) so I don't think I will be able to argue that one really. He has just reached his upper level on the Depakote and I'm wondering if I should push them to give him one more chance on this level of medicine?? Another problem will be - getting him to the new school. He won't go willingly I'm sure. Alll that will leave is a residential type of schooling. Aaaaaaugh!

I would ask that they bus him to the other school. I would also ask that they not call you to come get him for a while. THey have to break teh pattern of him going home.
Now for another thought, You might request they put a para with him. And that they not have him go home, he has to learn.
I know how hard a residential is to consider. There is also something called a day treatment program, this is something that just like a residential the state should be involved on. I would look into this if I were you.
This is a morning of classes, and afternoons usually group therapy, individual therapy, socialization time, and psychiatrist and other things.
Don't let them tell you residential is the only choice.

Meeting went surprisingly well. General thought is that he needs 1/2 day therapautic classroom and I believe he does. Problem is there is no space at the moment (although there is a chance a slot may come up soon). In the meantime the plan is to let him come to regular school for short periods to start with and work on lengthening them. For example, he arrives for lunch and then has to stay until the afternoon recess but then he can go. Or he comes in the morning and stays till morning recess etc. It's a reasonable plan which may work - definitely worth a go anyway. There is also an all day therapautic classroom but we are going to give the half day a go first. Whatever plan we come up he won't be thrilled with but I think this is a plan that definitely has possibilities. I was pleased with how the meeting went. Everyone was very relaxed and that helped a lot. Phew.

SOunds good, also have them lengthen the day as it goes on. Till the other class is open.
