My 9 year old keeps leaving the classroom and wanting to come home. I mean EVERY DAY. He is not really getting an education. He has pretty severe anxiety, ODD and depression and is currently on Lexapro, Abilify and Clonidine. A friend has suggested I stay in the classroom with him (oh yeah, I really want to do that!). Maybe I should. Problem is I'm not sure it would keep him in the classroom. I put the idea to him and to my surprise he seemed open to it but does he really see it as an even easier way to get himself home?? I suspect school would be cool to the idea. Although they are aware of his many problems they now have the mindset that he's got them over a barrel and knows it and would see this as giving in to him. What do you think?

I don't think this is a reasonable solution to the problem. I think the school needs to find out how to help with his anxiety so he can stay and learn.
Can you dig a little deeper and find out why this is happening?

I agree not a good idea. Can I ask does he have a IEp and does he have a emotional disability title. I think maybe he would benefit from a different kind of classroom.

Thanks for the replies. School is supposed to be working on the IEP but, of course, it's taking forever.

Okay, now
When did the evaluation get finished. When was the request for IEP meeting. Sorry they shouldn't be doing this by themselves you should be involved.
I would check my dates, if its been over two weeks, I would send a certified letter to the school, superintendent, the special education department saying I will contact the state for help if no meeting by Dec 1st. I would send a copy to department of education too.
Hmmm, also with what you write, you might be able to prove the delay is causing trouble, and require a paraprofessional assigned to him, when he leaves the room for the office, do not go get him when they call. Do not allow them to send him to resource room, unless he has work to do, and don't just let them sit him in the office.
Make them show you the work he is doing, and tell you how is sitting with him each day.

If you continue allowing them to send him home, they don't have a reason for a meeting, to find something that will work.
Its like when I was told my child needed to stay home becuase he has seizures. If he stayed home then he wouldn't have ever been in school.

All good thoughts. As usual everything is slow as molasses. We have just had a show down over a clinical psychological test (done at our local University) that was finished weeks ago and we still haven's got the report. Actually school says it's ready with their results we are all waiting on the University.

Can you call the university and tell them, that you have a meeting the monday after Thanksgiving and need the report by Wednesday.
I would try that. Even without a meeting scheduled. If the school is backing the need for the meeting, and paperwork make sure that they know you are doing this too.

The reason they let me bring him home is that he can get aggressive. Not everytime but sometimes. He's a heavy duty kid and can cause a lot of destruction in a short amount of time (his ODD kicking in). He's a lot better on that with medication but it's still there enough to worry them.
