Here we gooooooo! Just came back from my IEP meeting without the main teacher or Special ed teacher. They didn't make the meeting that was scheduled 2 weeks ago. My sons case worker was "nice" enough to call me yesterday to notify me of the change. Of course they wanted me to reschedule. NOOOOOO. My husband took off to come at 3pm for the meeting, PLUS my special ed teacher friend attended the meeting too. The principal was nervous when she saw my friend. She probably thought I got a lawyer. I also had a tape recorder, I let them know that I was recording the meeting (Principal "stated she wasn't comfortable with THAT). They couldn't call off the meeting-that would be illegal. We left the recorder on the table(it wasn't recording) but the Principal"took notes". Everybody going into a meeting IEP or 504, should warrent someone on the child study team to take notes. This way instead of just" discussing", your childs needs-there is written documentation. See... after 3 months of asking to implement this IEP(was to be completed the beginning of Sept. I was getting a little frustrated!! I think they knew I meant business!! If it comes to my child- I want nothing but the best. My child's case worker "stinks' so I will be asking for a new one. My friend told me that can change also. Didn't know that. All you Parents out there FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS!!!!!! I guess I can stop now...

Way to go, Andy! That's one of the wonderful benefits of coming to this board . . . getting great advise! I feel better able to go into my DS IEP appt later this month with more confidense and knowledge. Perhaps I need to take someone along that would have them wondering if the person was a lawyer! After my DS took his WIAT-II test yesterday, I asked the counselor how long it takes to get the results and she said a couple of days. I then proceeded to ask if she will call me when they are ready to pick up or will she mail them to me. She said they will wait until the meeting to show them to me! Yikes! I told her that I need them before the meeting as it is my right as the parent to have the results before hand to be prepared for the meeting. She kind of stammered a little and said that she will let me know when it is ready. I also asked for a set of text books to take home so that my DS (who is being homeschooled) will be caught up as he will be going back to school the day after the IEP meeting, once the modifications and accommodations are in place. She said she had to ask the principle. She later told me that the principal said I could not have a set of the text books! I said that was fine, they could get him caught up then. She then said she would ask the principal again about it. Hmm . . . I wonder what they will say. I just want my child to be able to successfully learn at school and have what he is rightfully entitled to.

Sharon Make sure that you state that an exta set of books are listed in the IEP. Once it is in they CANNOT deny you because it is the LAW! Good for you wanting to see the results early. Ask them if they have any policies(in writing) to back up the fact that you cannot view the test results prior to the meeting. If they cannot reveal that item, it is your right as a parent to demand it . Ask for everything in writing. Make a paper trail. ;D

That's right . . . I need to remember to put all of my requests in writing! I also need to remember to send it certified mail too. Thanks for the reminder!

Sharon, I was going to add, that a modification of a second set of books was necessary. But you got that. Yes, all in writing. I like the fact that they thought your friend was a lawyer, yep always take a accertive friend. The well dressed friend is usually feared, remember this if your ever asked to go with another. donna

OOPs, also sent them a certified letter, that the fact the teacher or special ed teacher couldn't come for the second time is a violation. That from now on if they need to change a meeting they ahve to give one weeks notice, since you bring others to your meetings.
And that only if you agree can the person not attend, so they should make sure all can come, before setting the meeting. Its against the law for them not to be at the meeting, or represented by another general ed teacher, and special ed teacher. I have waived these things, when asked a few times because of a urgency and the person they are requesting that I okay, isn't needed.
