Have you guys specified in your education plans anything about communication with substitute teachers? It seems that subs are never informed about my daughter's needs and she is not officially identified. From what I hear, subs are generally left in the dark about identified kids also. Terry

No, there is nothing in our IEP plan about Substitue Teachers.

TerryB as a former substitute teacher, we were almost never let in the loop on spec. educ. children. Many schools offered a sub folder that had school policies and routines. The teacher would add any info she wanted the sub to know about the students. For example it may say "Jimmy has a difficult time with transitions. Please be aware that giving him advanced notice will make his and your day smoother". There isn't any communication plans with subs. in my son's IEP. I never really thought about it before. It may be worth a quick note to my son's teacher on how it is handled at his school. He has always had an aide until this year so the aide would always inform his teacher about any important issues.

Dakotah, I was afraid that you would say that! It sould like I am expecting too much. If I were a teacher I would have a sub folder that was made ahead of time with a quick reference to all the kids with issues. I may have a little of that perfectionist thing going on though. Naturally, the diabetics, peanut allergies etc... would be on the top of the list. It seems that the teacher would have less of a "mess" to clean up when she got back if she helped the sub. be more successful all the way around. Terry

You know TerryB I really don't think you are expecting too much. I would consider a couple of things. You may have been asking the question about subs only because you are curious and really haven't had an issues with this topic or expect any issues in the future. If that is the case it is an interesting question and probably doesn't need to be addressed (we say it over and over- pick your battles carefully). Or subs have been or could be an issue for you and your child and you feel there needs to be something implemented. In that case I would ask the teacher how your school handles subs. The teacher/school very well may follow your ideas already. Your idea of how it should be handled is exactly how it should be. I think you are right on target with your expectations. When I taught full time I was the teacher who received the the self-contained spec. educ. students. My sub folder included your ideas. I didn't, however, go overboard on too much information. Unfortunately, getting great subs isn't easy. In fact our state is so short of subs that all you need is a BA in anything and you can sub. So many of the people subbing wouldn't have a clue as to how to handle the situation anyway. Sorry you probably didn't want that much information...
