I'm not sure if this is the right place or not. Somebody move it if it should be somewhere else!
Any parents with middle or high school students seen the blog craze? Do you know what I'm talking about?
It's an online journal that people keep. Some blogs allow other people to make comments about what people write. Then they get all organized up into blog rings that are interest groups.
I heard about this from some folks closer to civilization a year or so ago. It's finally hit our neck of the woods.
Bean Sprout has started writing a blog. He sits down and writes about his day just about the first thing when he gets home. 2 or 3 paragraphs sometimes more. His spelling is something awful and his grammar is purely embarrassing. My own writing is nothing to be proud of but he's downright pitiful. I hope his teachers don't read these things! But all the kids seem to write illiterate blogs. I think they do it intentionally. I fussed about proofreading a few times and he ignores me. Then I started making spelling lists of the words he spells wrong on his blog. I give both sprouts about 5 words on top of the words they get in school to practice every week. Bean Sprout's blog makes it easy for me to pick his words.
The main thing is he's writing! He's reading what other people write. And he's commenting on what other people write.
Most of the people who are blogging here just have their own little circle. But there are kids who are reading blogs from all over the country. Even other parts of the world.
I can see a lot of possibility for abuse. I told Bean Sprout to be very careful never to say anything bad about someone even if it's something he'd say to their face. They don't make internet white-out.
I wonder how many other parents in my area have found out about this blogging the teens are doing. You can find out a whole lot about what's going on at the school and in different classes by reading student blogs. I wonder if the schools know about it. I don't think so. I've seen a couple of blogs that would be closed down by now if they knew!
But the main point here is that Bean Sprout is getting practice writing creatively every day. He's learning how to put a humorous twist on things. He's learning how to entertain with his words.
I don't think they teach that in school these days. Glad he's learning it on his own ;D
