We are doing stimulant med breaks this summer. But I want my sprouts to do some academic work every day. From what they tell me I'm a real slave driver. But I know what it's like in the fall if they don't use their skills all summer.
I'm trying a couple different things this summer. We're working on skills that are used in all subjects but aren't really taught in any class because many people just pick them up naturally. So we're working on test taking skills and reading comprehension text book style and math. About 60% of their work is from workbooks. The other 40% is from various education software. For software I'm focusing mostly on math but want each sprout to work a little in some other subjects too. Science and history are what I'm pushing but they have quite a few choices from the ed packs I bought. I give the sprouts 1-2 days off each week max. We usually do this first thing in the morning. They grumble and growl but since all electronic entertainment is off the table until they do some academics we usually get it out of the way by 10 am or so. What I ask usually takes them 1 hour or less. With Bean Sprout I'm doing some more intensive tutoring in Algebra because he barely scraped by in 8th grade Algebra. He just loves that his old crabby mom knows enough to teach him algebra . Boy is he going to be disappointed when he finds out I'll be tutoring him all through high school if he needs it. I'm kind of looking forward to going through trig and calculus again ;D. I'm flight checked from basic math through non-Euclidean geometry. I can brush up beyond that if I need to.
Do you find that you need to keep your kids rolling on these skills through the summer? If so what are you doing? How much time are you requiring per week? What is working for you? I'd love to hear about other families plans and experiences. I could probably learn a thing or two.
