Can someone tell me the difference between Chapter 504 --I think that is what it is called and IEP plan. My son was diagnosed with ADHD about a month or so ago. The school system is going to test him in Sept. He has very good grades and focuses fine but he can be disruptive interms of talking out and sometimes being rude. He is on Strattera (although only the nurse of the school knows). He is 10 1/2 yrs. old. He did get into behavioral trouble including detention and one day suspension for school and a couple of bus suspensions all of which I don't think he was fairly treated. We believe he is "pegged' for being a bad kid when he isn't. Outside of his 4th grade class he is fine. He sleeps over his friend's house and is always welcome. Anyway back to the subject. What is the difference. We basically had him labeled as "ADHD" to reserve his legal rights and for the teacher to give proper feedback at school. We have asked his 4th grade teacher constantly for feedback (even the principle asked him) and that lasted for one day and it was back to no feedback. He is the type of kid that needs feedback on his behavior so we can talk to him and keep him on track. He will be starting a new class, new grade and clean slate and hopefully 4th grade will be a distant memory. thanks for reading. jennifer

Hi thank you for the info. In regards to a behavior modification plan can that involve "forcing" the teacher to do a weekly behavior checksheet for the child and sending it home to the parent. We wanted that done with the 4th grade teacher but he was awful in feedback. He didn't want anything to do with feedback. He did it for a couple of days and then never did it again. It only takes like 5 minutes and could save so much hassle. Would a behavior modificate plan be counted under an IEP still. I read that in our state (MA) that if a child can not be suspended for actions he has done that could have been from his ADHD. (i.e. impulsively saying something to the bus driver in a rude manner-for which he was suspended from the bus for two days). Do you know anything about that. thanks again for any info. Jennifer

Jennifer The modification plan can be in an IEP, in which it should state what would happen if he does a certain thing etc. It can also state that he will not be "punish" by detention etc for actions that are directly related to his ADHD. "d" posted a site recently from the Education Dept about it recently. I'll see if I can find the thread.
