Hi my son was just diagnosed with ADHD. This yr. is just about over. He was suspended once, detention once and a couple of bus suspensions all due to his behavioral problems. A kid kept teasing him and bothering him. The suspension arose out of him "supposly" saying I going to punch and kill a kid. He denies it to this day. He is not a type of kid who could hurt anyone nor is he big enough. Another incident which wasn't suspended just warned is that a kid punched him and the vice principle said the other kid couldn't have punched him. Well when the facts came out it was the other kid who punched him. . Another incident at school was that he didn't understand what the teacher was saying and asked the teacher about 5 times and finally the teacher just told him to go to the vice principles office where he just sat for 1/2 hr. and went back. The incident that got him detention was where he was trying to ask a kid a question nad the kid kept ignoring him so he went to the kickball game and just kicked the ball and said "idiot" and then the kid threw a football at his back as he was walking away. Oh one final incident a kid pulled at him b/c he was sitting int he 5th grade seats not 4th (he was one row too many). Of course he said stop it about 5 times and then said a swear. He later said he was having a bad day and just sat in the wrong seat which shouldn't have been such a big deal. Anyway my son is far from an angel but some of the incidents are not his fault. If these incidents happenned next yr after being diagnosed w/ADHD would he have been suspended etc. He is working hard to control his anger and so far he hanging in . thanks for reading

Oh boy have I been there done that. DS14 has been thru everything you just described. He is not a bad kid, but has a few impulsive issues which usually come out by running his mouth. He is also not as sneaky as the others his age, and gets caught more when he acts up, therefore he is the one who gets into trouble even if there were others involved in the incident. It is also the others who are believed when there is a disagreement about what happened. I finally started writing down everything each kid said, and would bring this notebook to all meetings with teachers and principals, and did manage to catch a few of the kids changing their stories, which made the principal start to atleast listen to my DS without first just saying he was wrong and giving him a punishment. We also got him an IEP with some modifications in the classroom, which make it easier for him to ask for help. We did put him on meds, and I am glad we did even if they do not work on some kids, they were great in our case. I hope your son gets some help with his school issues. I spend lots of time talking to the teachers and principal, and probably will all thru highschool.

If I read your question right, I believe you were asking if he would still be suspended even tho he is diagnosed adhd - and the answer is probably yes. The diagnosis can help you get treatment and accomodations, however depending on the behavior issues your son can still face consequences at school.
I hope you investigate all available options to treat adhd. As you can see from this board, alot of us have had great success with medications - it has truly changed my sons life. For those children who can't take meds, there are natural alternatives as well as therapy and behavior modification techniques that can show some success.
I wish you luck with your son and finding suitable options for him.

My son will be starting Strattera after school is over since there is only 4 more days. We don't want to start incase there are side effects. We tried starting the other day at night and he didn't sleep well and was up alot and ended up coming home from school early. He was on metadate cd for about a week and he became obsessive and we didn't like those results so we stopped that. He has been on Lexapro for anxiety which seems to help somewhat
In MA I believe there is a law that under the Chapter 504 that behavior discpline is treated differently. A child would be suspended if he or she bought a gun or drugs. Other than that if it is related to the ADHD then the child isn't suspended. Atleast that is how my husband and I read it. We are getting a drs. note saying the diagnosis and getting core evaluation in early Sept. He thankfully doesn't need academic accomodations other than possible math help b/c he rushes through the math. Jennifer
