Well, almost out, one more week. But if feels as if it's out around our house. What I mean is that EOGs are over, that's the end of grade testing here in North Carolina, a huge source of stress and anxiety for all concerned. If the kids don't pass, they have to go to summer school or be held back a year. My dd passed and did well so she's feeling very relieved. The talent development(gifted)classes have ended and that, too, is a great source of relief for my child. In the math TD class, she had a personality conflict with the teacher which added even more stress. I guess my point here is that now that these things have ended, we're seeing a much happier, calmer child. School, we have realized, is a huge source of anxiety for her. Besides just being required to focus all day, she has some auditory processing problems, and some visual-motor difficulties
which compound the problem. We'll be working on these things this summer and hopefully, next fall, we'll see that happier, calmer child more often.
If you haven't had your child tested for visual or auditory problems, I highly recommend that you do. We never would've known WHY she's so anxious if we hadn't done this a few months ago. It's truly amazing what can cause a child to become anxious, weird stuff like developmental coordination problems which manifest in moving the pencil with the wrong muscles and visual tracking problems which can slow them down and make it appear that they're being careless when they're not. I think we'll also begin therapy with our psychologist who said he can teach her breathing techniques, etc. that will help her deal with anxiety when it crops up. Hopefully, insurance will help pay for this but even if it won't, it probably will be worth the
cost to relieve our child of the anxiety she feels.
I never realized the HUGE impact that anxiety can have. And oftentimes, it just looks like one very irritable kid!
