I received a flyer from a company that offers phonics comprehension and speed reading- study skills. It is offered during the summer at a local University for four year olds up to 11th graders. I think it is from the University of Detroit Mercy. I was thinking of maybe signing up my son but I don't know anything else about it. Has anybody else heard of it or sent there kids thru it. It sounds like it is nation wide program and runs about $300. It says the class is not more that 22 students and the instructors are from the Institute of Reading Development. Any feedback would be helpful before I blow $300.......

If this is for a child with ADHD I would definately do more research or ask the child's counselor what they think. I suspect speed reading is a bad idea with kids who have ADHD and maybe other kids as well. Many try to do this already and miss much of the content of what they are reading. I was forced to take a speed reading coarse in highschool and I hated it. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't read as fast as everyone else and I never understood much of what I had just skimmed over. It was an extremely frustrating experience for me and maybe more so because reading and English are some of my strengths but not if I'm forced to do so in a careless way.
