Question: Has any one out there ever requested copies of everything that the school may be keeping on your child? My son is about to leave elementary school, and move on to Junior High. I am curious as to what over the past 6 years has been accumulated, and how to view and get a copy of all this. I want to see this, (I think) so that if there is anything that should not be in there, maybe I can change this before leaving this school. Some part of me is afraid that I may be opening a can of worms. JV

JV, you are entitlted to look at your son's files anytime. Just write a request to the school. Make sure to also check Central Files - which maybe in the school district office. This contains more than what the school has.

Thanks Mayleng,
I am so terrified of doing this, I keep thinking, I might see something that will really upset me, and then again, maybe yes I will, but at least I can do something about it or challenge it before I leave this school. JV

JV Makes sense to me to make sure everything is in order. You don't want to have to start with problems in the middle school.

What would be in there besides report cards, test results, IEP and 504 info?

What would be in there besides report cards, test results, IEP and 504 info? Besides report cards, if an evaluation was done, IEPs, teachers' reports, memos from teachers to principal and vice versa, any and every document relating to your child. A "friend" recently found out what they wrote about her when she requested her brother's file. She had been advocating for her brother. They did not write good things about her. She was upset but it gave her immunition if she ever wanted to go to due process. So check central files, there is more than one file on your child.

Okay, we recieved my sons files yesterday. There were no surprises. When we sent in the request to the school the principal called right away, wanted to assure me that the only thing moving on to Jr. High was what has been done over the years from the school psychologist, which we had viewed & signed, the 504's and the IEP's, no personal commentary's were in there. He was right, but there was alot to go through. Some of it brought back so many painful memories, I just wished alot of this stuff would have never happened. Most of it refers to his "emotional state", which at the time was out of control. I wish I could make that stuff go away, since the son we have now, even by the schools comments, "is not the same kid, he doesn't get upset over the little stuff any more". I am going to see if we can get him changed from an "EI" category to "other health impaired" since I feel this no longer aplies to him at all. Thank God to maturity and Strat. JV

JV Yes, if EI were stated in the earlier IEPs and is not the case now, you can call an IEp meeting and try to have the category changed to OHI for ADHD. Also, I think they have to have a transition meeting with you and the Sped Ed teachers and the psych etc from the Junior High to go over the IEP and to get everything set up for Junior High.

Mayleng, Thanks for the encouragment. You are right about the IEP being schedualed for the transition to JR HIGH. Its been delayed, we are expecting it to be set up some time in April. I guess I should get on the ball, let the Speial Ed teacher know that I intend to have his IEP altered, changed. This may require some evaluations prior to the meeting or something, at least she will know about our intentions. JV

Good Luck and let us know what happens.
