Hello everyone!!!! I have a question? What is a 504? My 15 yr old had an IEP which has helped alot, especially since he refuses to take medication. He is getting resource room help for math and english and is still in the regular class room for science, geography, and computer lit. They said he scored below in reading but they do not offer that and they would incorporate that with the english, through vocabulary and spelling tests. My next question is if he can not read at his grade level how is he expected to function in these regular class rooms? He has been on several stimulants and straterra and does not like the way they made him feel and he will not take it. He even acted like he was taking it and would spit it out as soon as you turned your head. When they did his IEP he was failing every class. He is a freshman in highschool. Any suggestions? chaknine

He has been on several stimulants and straterra and does not like the way they made him feel and he will not take it. He even acted like he was taking it and would spit it out as soon as you turned your head. When they did his IEP he was failing every class. He is a freshman in highschool. Any suggestions? chaknine Has the school ever done an evaluation for him to get the IEP? If so, they should do an evaluation every 3 years to see where he is at. It is BS that they don't offer remediation in Reading. YOu should call an IEP meeting, and tell them that since he is not reading at grade level, you want a full academic evaluation, and that you want him to have help with his reading. He may be dyslexic. Has that been rule out. If he is dyslexic, he needs an intensive multisensory type of remediation like Orton Gillingham (OG). Dyslexic's don't learn to read the same way as "regular" readers. If he can't read, how is he supposed to be able to learn. A 504, is a civil rights plan for people with disabilities. In this case, the ADHD would qualify him for a 504. But since he already has an IEP, you really don't need a 504. The 504 gives accomodations, but not necessarily resource room help. I suggest you get on the school's case, and see to getting some reading help for your son. He needs intensive, systematic and multisensory type programs to help him read like OG , Lindamood Bell, Slingerland and Wilson are some of the programs.
