Need help:
Ds' teacher called yesterday to tell me that he's being silly in class (burping, silly smiles, etc.) in his seating group. DS is 8 and in 3rd grade.
She asked about a medication change. I told her I didn't think it warranted any changes or additions to the medication, and that I'd talk to him about his behavior. Unless it causes a disturbance in class (she didn't say it had, just that a couple of kids had mentioned ds was acting silly in study group and couldn't settle down), or his grades drop dramatically, I'm all for behavior modification to deal with this. However, I'm not sure he's acting any sillier than other 8 yo boys, KWIM? Yes, he seems to be going through a silly phase, but don't most boys this age?
When I addressed him about it, I told him he wasn't in trouble and I wasn't upset, but that he needs to be more aware of how his actions affect others, and that school is serious business. He seemed oblivious to his own behavior until I mentioned it.
I think he had some trouble transitioning back to school after the holiday break, and the new study group is a new arrangement, both of which could be causing some of the distraction...but I don't want to make excuses for him, either.
It's such a fine line - is he doing it deliberately for the attention, is it a tic, distraction, coping mechanism, what? He has TS as well as ADHD, though the TS is very mild.
I also noticed that the science work they're doing is ridiculously beyond their years (hypotheses, variables, testing substances, and they have to use those exact terms), and it's in science that he seems most distracted (according to the teacher).
I'm wondering if he's feeling overwhelmed by some of the material and "checking" out. She mentioned he sometimes puts his head down on the desk for a minute or two - I'm wondering if it's a coping mechanism when he feels overwhelmed - because he's not tired - he's going to bed on time and waking up by himself at 7 a.m....
Any thoughts? I dont' want T to become the "class clown" to get attention or make friends. He does say he likes school, and he does have friends....
Thanks for any feedback.
Kris
