My 9 yr old who has a 504 and high functioning autism was about to take a math quiz yesterday. Math is his fav class. Due to poor handwriting he needs a block on his pencil so the letters are legible. He told the teacher this(he also has OCD) and she masde no attempt to find one or offer suggestions to change the enviroment. Ex, take quiz another day, get block from home and do test at home, use computer. She sent the test home w/ a 0 on it and wrote a note on it that he could read! Talk about privacy!! He was upset due to the fact he failed! He is an A student. She can't do this because he has a 504 right? We have sent a formal letter to the principal!

If it is in the 504, she has to accomodate. YOu did the right thing writing to the principal. If it is not in the 504, then have it included in it, and inform the teacher of his accomodations. In fact, you should make sure all his teachers know what his accomodations in the 504 are. Sometimes they are not informed. Make a copy and go over it with this teacher.

Here's a sad one. My husband is a 9th grade teacher and he just found out that one of his students has a 504 rather than being notified in September. Never trust the system.

When my son started Junior High in August I sent every one of his teachers an e-mail telling them of his 504. It really helped.

:)Hello everyone! Thank you for your input! Thank God you are all here! I couldn't go through this alone! I shook things up at school! I'm getting a meeting set up for next week for all to make revisions for his 504! Stand up for your child! Get out that pointy hat!! I'm paying this teacher to stress out my child? NO! She also is damaging his self esteem! NEVER! not as long as I live!
