Hi, my daughter has started playing with her hair to keep herself alert in school. At home she does it and she sometimes gets carried away with twisting or braiding and this distracts her from what she is suppose to be doing so then I have to say something. I know she needs to fidget, but I'm concerned that she is getting too distracted by the "hair activities." On the other hand, I'm glad it is not nail-biting or something worse that she is doing. She use to fall out of her chair and this seems to be gone. Thanks, Terry

What is she doing with it? Is she twirling it? Sucking on it?
My 9 year old does both of those things occasionally, usually if she's nervous about something. My understanding is that those are tics. What she's been doing a lot of lately is licking her hands. It's just driving me nuts. I hope she's not doing this at school.

Mostly she strokes a strand. Sometimes she twirls or twists it. Rarely she sucks it but I've been discouraging that. Today she has discovered how soft it feels on her upper lip just like when she was a baby and had a blanket! She's 7 now.

From what you're describing, it sounds pretty normal for the age.

ah..the hair thingy !
Our daughter likes to take her little braids by the ends and 'brush' her face with them. It seems to calm her down and relax her ( she is African American and I keep her hair full of little short chin length braids) I have found that if her hair is pulled back in a pony tail or even if the braids are too far back for her to 'stroke' her cheeks and chin she becomes very anxious. Lately I have been trying to just keep her hair the way she likes it. I would not consider it a tic at this point as I think she has just found a 'soother'.

My daughter twists and forms knots and then pulls them out.She had a hugh bald spot a few months ago while on adderall. When we took her off the adderall, she stopped and the hair grew back.We tried Strattera for two months but had to go to Concerta. She did fine at first. But after we increased her dose, she started twisting again. It lookes almost like she is braiding or something and can't stop. She tries to stop but can't.Clonidine helps but causes her to fall asleep in class.I don't want her to get another bald spot so I just lowered her Concerta. My neice done this also when she was on ritalin and lost all of her hair on one side.My brother took her off and it stopped. She has struggled in school for 8 yrs because he was afraid to let her try any other med.

I'm thinking of pulling her hair back if it gets excessive. She's not on meds yet but with OCD in the family, I'm fearful of what could "come out" as a side effect of certain meds. So far she is doing fine with ADHD tools but she is only in 2nd grade! Time will tell how much this is going to affect her.
Thanks for replying. Terry
