I on the other hand am right-handed but when I have to deal cards, I do it with my left-hand. It's got something to do with how her brain is wired. Have you ever had her evaluated by an OT?

Well, if you feel there is something wrong, I would have her evaluated soon. Early OT can help. Unless you feel it is a developmental thing and that she will get better with age and maturity. At worse case, come 1st grade, and if she continues to have trouble with her fine motor skills, I would write a letter to the school to insist on an OT evaluation. Don't drop the ball on this.

I had a conference with my 5 yr. olds K teacher last month. I have been concerned like you are. His work and cutting ect. leaves a lot to be desired. He has always showed left handed tendencies but is using his right hand now since he has started school. I think he is just following the way he is being taught and it is not working for him.....BUT
She said to not say anything to him and let his strong side take over by itself and do NOT encourage him. She has also worked in the medical field with troubled children and learning disabilites ect...so I guess I will listen to her advice for now. I hope she is right as my thoughts are with yours, give him the proper tools ect...so he can do the best he can do. We'll see Good luck

My son is also lefthanded. He has had a lot of trouble with writing and cutting. He was in developmental preschool at the elementary and started OT then. He is now in kindergarten and still in OT. If you think that OT would help I would insist on them testing her now. I know that my son has benefitted from an early start.
He had a poor pincer grasp that affected how he held his pencil and he also curved his hand in so that he ended up not being able to control his pencil. He was all over the page.
Also I think that getting left handed scissors would be a good thing. I learned that there is no such thing as ambidextrous scissors. The ones we first bought said that they could be used by right or left handers. His teachers are both lefthanded and told me that these kind of scissors are still hard for leftys to use. It has to do with the natural flow of how the scissors open and close. When a lefty uses these kind of scissors they are forcing the scissors open and closed and it just makes it harder for them.

We live in a very nice school district and OT starts in K-G. Early intervention. I wouldn't try to force a lefty to write with the right hand. Let nature take it's course.

Hi my six year old just started Kindergarten in Sept. He writes, and eats with the left hand. He cuts, hits and throws a ball with his right hand. He is doing fine so far. His teacher said just let him figure out which one he is comfortable with on his own. I am the same way. I eat and write lefty, all sports and cutting are done with the right. I think its very interesting.

I write lefthanded but I throw a ball, play tennis, and do many other things with my right hand. This also runs in my family. All the women are lefthanded - my mother, her mother, my great grandmother. And now, my daughter is lefthanded. This is just a hunch but I suspect that myself and my mother are ADHD. My grandmother could have been. I didn't know my great-gran but she sounded like a real terror! Wonder if there's a connection between lefthandedness and ADHD. How many of your kids are lefthanded?
Lefthandedness is a fascinating topic. Lefthanded folks are supposed to excel in the arts, sports, and architecture for some reason. A friend of mine who is a special ed teacher also says that many folks with learning disabilities are also lefthanded, including both of her sons who are dyslexic. I'm lefthanded, maybe that includes me! Would love to read a book on this topic. Does anyone know of one?

I think the answer to your question is yes. Left handed products can often help. My sister is left handed and I think she used to have some left handed products. I could be wrong about this but I thought most scissors for grade school age kids are made for both left or right hand use these days. The only way to be sure would be to read the packaging.
Some people who are ambidextrous tend to favor one hand for one activity and the other hand for a different activity. For instance, they write with their right hand but play golf better with left handed golf clubs.

When my nephew started eating and writing, we noticed that he was a leftie. When he started t-ball in kindergarten, we bought him a leftie's glove and was trying to teach him to throw the ball with his left hand. I'm from a "softball fanatic" family, so we were very disappointed when he wasn't able to throw the ball well. We all started working with him in our spare time. We considered the fact that maybe he wasn't really a leftie, but he did EVERYTHING with his left hand and had the neatest hanwriting you've ever seen (he's in the first grade now and I swear his handwriting is neater than some adults I know). We tried to get him to throw with his right hand but it was just as bad as with his left. Finally his coach started working with him separately at practice. He really does throw better with his right hand, we just weren't giving him enough opportunites to do it. The coach let him go without his glove for a few pratices (the glove was what was confusing him, because it was a left-handers glove) and eventually he became one of the best arms on the team! It's funny because that is the ONLY thing that he does with his right hand, at least so far.

It's soooo great to find everyone!!! I have been looking for a while now and didn't know where to go. I am lefthanded too I cut paper with my right hand but cut hair with my left (I'm a hairdresser). I can't cut paper with my left hand nor hair with my right. I tie backwards too. Felt tip and gel pens are a HORROR they blead all over the paper when your hand passes. there are left handed notebooks too!!! the spiral is on the oppisite side. Handwirting is a nitemare and you always have to sit on the outside of the bench when eating or your gonna get your hamburger shoved into your face! ;D mu son is righthanded and we are at it all the time. I have to remember MIRROR image all the time. Whatever I would do, he does it backwards. (or vice versa
