I thought I'd report something good. My 2nd grade dd has had a real boost in self-confindence this year. She's been telling me that she is learning to pay attention more but I really didn't believe her. Then we got her report card and she had a 3- (graded 1-4) for attention skills. I was really thrilled with this. Just today we had a conference with the teacher and she said she is really at a solid 3 now. This is comprable to a "normal" child I think. She's not all stressed-out achieving this either. She's also not medicated. I'm not sure how she is accomplishing this but I did discuss the "SLANT" technique with her. Another thing we have done over the past year is we have given her every opportunity to explore her creative talents. We were hoping that it would boost her self-respect and help her to have more confidence to succeed in other areas such as Math. Other things that may have helped: She has only watched PBS TV and only on weekends. We have been reading to her at bedtime since she was 6 months old so her reading skills are advanced. We took her off the afternoon bus ride (long ride, rough kids). We do tough homework in spurts until she gets frustrated or gets "brain-fade". We stress how everyone has challenges and her issues could be way worse.
I know that doing the things we did will not solve every child's ADHD issues but hopefully something here can be useful to other parents. One real plus for us is that my dd does not have any LD associated and she's not super hyper but primarily inattentive.
