A friend of mine forwarded this article and I thought it interesting. Quote: It's been awhile since I posted anything about the re-authorization of IDEA. I found this article and I wanted to share it with all of you.
www.educationnews.org/partnership-without- advocacy-equ.htm
It's an opinion piece written by Tricia and Calvin Luker and the title is: "PARTNERSHIP WITHOUT ADVOCACY EQUALS POLITICS" from their web site: Ourchildrenleftbehind.com
Here's a paragraph:
"IDEA ’97 is not a perfect law, nor should we be forced to claim that it is in order to raise our voices against the proposed changes. Parents still have virtually no power in the IEP process because there are so few reliable sources available to them to help them effectively prepare for IEP Team meetings and for their children’s educational needs. Even under IDEA ’97, parents still can be easily intimidated by the IEP development process and the school administrators who drive the process. These circumstances do not call for partnerships or reduced accountability. They accent the continuing need for strong advocacy and maximum use of legal protections to ensure that IDEA is followed for their child."
I think it's worth a couple of your minutes - they make some really interesting points.Unquote
