As you can tell by some of my recent threads, I have been getting a bit frustrated at how things are going lately. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions, and hope you have some clarity on what has easily become one of our greatest challenges.
My 6th grade son continues to have difficulty organizing his things for school. He's going to class unprepared, his locker is a mess, and many papers that should be filed into his binders during class are coming home instead (or are stuffed into his locker). His WISC scores for working memory were above average (but he has lower processing speed and multiple VMI type issues).
I brought this up at our recent 504 meeting. For class preparation, they are going to check that his locker checklist is still there. For the class notes that should be in his binders, I was told to organize them with him at home in case he needs them. It appears that they are not marking him down if something isn't turned in on time, or is left in his locker, so as long as his test grades are good these issues don't show up in his grades.
Why is organizing and storing his class notes falling on my shoulders and on our time outside of school? If other students are accomplishing this during the school day, shouldn't my son be doing so as well? And if he is unable to do this like other students, shouldn't this be a red flag that he needs more help from the school? We certainly have our own organizational challenges to focus on at home without adding this to the list.
It sounds like the school is saying that if a child isn't learning the content of the curriculum it is their job to deal with it. If a child is lacking in EF / adaptive (or any other) skills it's on me. Do I just need a reality check here?
Thanks
