Hello, I am currently working on my certification to be a teacher of students with learning disabilities, and I need to interview a parent of a student with a IEP. I thought it would best to do this assignment anonymously in order to receive honest answers and reactions. The questions are posted below. If any parent, or a few parents would be able to take a few minutes to answer them, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance for your time. If you would rather email me the answers rather then post them, just click the "email me" button at the bottom of this post and copy and paste the questions. - How would you describe your cultural background?
- What are your values on education?
- How do you view disability and ability? How is this view different than the rest of the family’s view?
- How do you believe disabilities should be handled in the school setting?
- What are some challenges that your child had in school due to his or her disability?
- How has your experience been with the school(s) in regards to special education?
- What are your feelings about special education?
- Do you believe that your cultural background and values influence your views on special education?
- What advise do you have for future teachers of students with disabilities?

Vanessa, welcome to our forum. Several other prospective school psychologists and special ed teachers have posed similar questions to parents over the years, and you can read about my son's story at millermom.proboards.com/thread/13329/future-teacher-parent-interviewI think it addresses the majority of your questions, but if you have additional concerns, I'll be happy to respond again later.
